- Knife and cutting board
- Whisk
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean recommended)
- 1/3 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons milk (or unsweetened almond milk)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tablespoons whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (optional)
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently until just combined—avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.
- Form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties.
Step 2: Brown the Patties
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside (they will finish cooking in the gravy).
Step 3: Make the Mushroom Gravy
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté for 5–7 minutes until softened and lightly browned.
- Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir well to coat.
- Slowly whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- Add fresh thyme if using, and simmer for 3–4 minutes until the gravy begins to thicken.
Step 4: Simmer and Serve
- Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
- Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–12 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through (internal temperature of 160°F).
- Spoon the mushroom gravy over each patty before serving.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve hot.
TIPS:
- Serve with mashed cauliflower or steamed green beans for a lighter option.
- You can substitute ground turkey for a leaner alternative.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, let it simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes.
