COOK TIME: 25 minutes
COURSE: Main Course
CUISINE: American
SERVINGS: 4 servings

EQUIPMENT:

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Large skillet with lid
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Whisk

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean recommended)
  • 1/3 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk (or unsweetened almond milk)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (optional)
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix gently until just combined—avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.
  3. Form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties.

Step 2: Brown the Patties

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
  3. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside (they will finish cooking in the gravy).

Step 3: Make the Mushroom Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté for 5–7 minutes until softened and lightly browned.
  2. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir well to coat.
  3. Slowly whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
  4. Add fresh thyme if using, and simmer for 3–4 minutes until the gravy begins to thicken.

Step 4: Simmer and Serve

  1. Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
  2. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–12 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through (internal temperature of 160°F).
  3. Spoon the mushroom gravy over each patty before serving.
  4. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve hot.

TIPS:

  • Serve with mashed cauliflower or steamed green beans for a lighter option.
  • You can substitute ground turkey for a leaner alternative.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, let it simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes.
