PREP TIME: 15 minutes
COOK TIME: 25 minutes
COURSE: Appetizer
CUISINE: American
SERVINGS: 4 servings
EQUIPMENT:
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper or aluminum foil
- Wire rack (optional, for extra crispiness)
- Knife and cutting board
- Toothpicks (optional)
- Basting brush
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 large sweet onions
- 12–16 slices bacon (thin to regular cut works best)
- 1/4 cup barbecue sauce (optional, for brushing)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Place a wire rack on top if using.
- Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
- Separate the rings and pair similar-sized rings together to create sturdy stacks if desired.
Step 2: Wrap with Bacon
- Wrap each onion ring tightly with a slice of bacon, slightly overlapping as you go.
- If needed, secure the ends with a toothpick.
- Place the wrapped rings seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet or rack.
Step 3: Season and Bake
- In a small bowl, mix garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper.
- Lightly sprinkle the seasoning blend over the bacon-wrapped rings.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the bacon is crispy and fully cooked. For extra crispiness, broil for an additional 2–3 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
Step 4: Optional Glaze and Serve
- If using barbecue sauce, brush a thin layer over the rings during the last 5 minutes of baking.
- Remove from the oven and let them rest for 5 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and serve warm.
TIPS:
- Use thinner bacon for easier wrapping and crispier results.
- Cook on a wire rack to allow fat to drip away and promote even crisping.
- Serve with ranch, spicy mayo, or a yogurt-based dip for a healthier twist.
