  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Serving bowls

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 4 cups water or low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup whole milk (or unsweetened almond milk for a lighter option)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Bring Liquid to a Simmer

  1. In a medium saucepan, bring the water or chicken broth to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Once boiling, reduce heat slightly to maintain a steady simmer.

Step 2: Whisk in the Grits

  1. Slowly whisk in the stone-ground grits to prevent lumps from forming.
  2. Reduce the heat to low and continue whisking for 1–2 minutes until the mixture begins to thicken.
  3. Cover partially and allow the grits to cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 3: Make Them Creamy

  1. Stir in the milk and butter once the grits are tender and thickened.
  2. Add salt and black pepper, adjusting to taste.
  3. If using cheese, stir in the shredded cheddar until fully melted and smooth.

Step 4: Serve Warm

  1. Spoon the creamy grits into serving bowls while hot.
  2. Top with an extra pat of butter or a sprinkle of cheese if desired.
  3. Serve immediately and enjoy this comforting Southern favorite!

TIPS:

  • For extra richness, substitute half-and-half for the milk.
  • Stir frequently to prevent lumps and ensure ultra-smooth grits.
  • Top with sautéed shrimp, crispy bacon, or a poached egg for a complete meal.
