PREP TIME: 15 minutes
COOK TIME: 20 minutes
COURSE: Main Course
CUISINE: American
SERVINGS: 4 servings

EQUIPMENT:

  • Large skillet
  • Mixing bowl
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef (90% lean preferred)
  • 1/3 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk (or unsweetened almond milk)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix gently until just combined—do not overmix.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties about 1/2-inch thick.

Step 2: Brown the Patties

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
  3. Transfer the patties to a plate and set aside (they will finish cooking in the gravy).

Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Cook over medium heat for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly caramelized.
  2. Sprinkle whole wheat flour over the onions and stir well to coat.
  3. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
  4. Add thyme if using, and simmer for 3–4 minutes until the gravy thickens.

Step 4: Simmer and Serve

  1. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
  2. Cover and simmer for 8–10 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through (internal temperature of 160°F).
  3. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve hot.

TIPS:

  • Serve over mashed cauliflower, brown rice, or whole grain mashed potatoes for a balanced meal.
  • For extra vegetables, sauté mushrooms along with the onions.
  • You can substitute ground turkey for a leaner option.
