COURSE: Main Course
CUISINE: American
SERVINGS: 4 servings
EQUIPMENT:
- Large skillet
- Mixing bowl
- Knife and cutting board
- Wooden spoon or spatula
- Measuring cups and spoons
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef (90% lean preferred)
- 1/3 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons milk (or unsweetened almond milk)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons whole wheat flour
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently until just combined—do not overmix.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties about 1/2-inch thick.
Step 2: Brown the Patties
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
- Transfer the patties to a plate and set aside (they will finish cooking in the gravy).
Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Cook over medium heat for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly caramelized.
- Sprinkle whole wheat flour over the onions and stir well to coat.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- Add thyme if using, and simmer for 3–4 minutes until the gravy thickens.
Step 4: Simmer and Serve
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
- Cover and simmer for 8–10 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through (internal temperature of 160°F).
- Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve hot.
TIPS:
- Serve over mashed cauliflower, brown rice, or whole grain mashed potatoes for a balanced meal.
- For extra vegetables, sauté mushrooms along with the onions.
- You can substitute ground turkey for a leaner option.
