PREP TIME: 10 minutes
COOK TIME: 30 minutes
COURSE: Appetizer
CUISINE: American
SERVINGS: 6 servings

EQUIPMENT:

  • Sharp knife and cutting board
  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet or aluminum pan
  • Parchment paper or foil
  • Spatula or wooden spoon
  • Oven or smoker

INGREDIENTS:

  • 8 all-beef hot dogs
  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite variety)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Fresh chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Prepare the Hot Dogs

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (or smoker to 250°F if using).
  2. Slice each hot dog into bite-sized pieces, about 1 inch thick.
  3. Place the hot dog pieces into a mixing bowl.

Step 2: Season and Sauce

  1. In the bowl, add BBQ sauce, melted butter, brown sugar, honey, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. Toss everything together until the hot dog pieces are evenly coated.
  3. Spread the coated pieces in a single layer on a lined baking sheet or aluminum pan.

Step 3: Bake or Smoke

  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, stirring halfway through, until the edges are caramelized and slightly crisp.
  2. If using a smoker, cook for 45–60 minutes at 250°F until the sauce thickens and the edges develop a smoky char.
  3. For extra caramelization, broil for 2–3 minutes at the end (watch carefully to avoid burning).

Step 4: Garnish and Serve

  1. Remove from the oven or smoker and let cool for a few minutes.
  2. Sprinkle with fresh chopped parsley if desired.
  3. Serve warm with toothpicks and extra BBQ sauce for dipping.

TIPS:

  • Use turkey or chicken hot dogs for a lighter option.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for heat.
  • For a keto-friendly version, use a sugar-free BBQ sauce and substitute a sugar alternative for the brown sugar.
