COURSE: Main Course
CUISINE: American
SERVINGS: 6 servings

EQUIPMENT:

  • Large Dutch oven or oven-safe pot
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Tongs
  • Aluminum foil
  • Meat thermometer

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 pounds beef brisket (trimmed of excess fat)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Prepare the Brisket

  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Pat the beef brisket dry with paper towels and season generously with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and dried thyme.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  4. Sear the brisket on both sides for 4-5 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove and set aside.

Step 2: Build the Flavor Base

  1. In the same pot, add the sliced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  2. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

Step 3: Slow Cook the Brisket

  1. Return the seared brisket to the pot, spooning some of the sauce over the top.
  2. Cover with a lid or tightly with aluminum foil.
  3. Transfer to the preheated oven and cook for about 3 hours, or until the brisket is fork-tender and reaches an internal temperature of at least 195°F (90°C).

Step 4: Rest and Serve

  1. Remove the brisket from the oven and let it rest for 15-20 minutes before slicing.
  2. Slice against the grain for maximum tenderness.
  3. Spoon the rich cooking sauce over the top and garnish with freshly chopped parsley.
  4. Serve warm with roasted vegetables or a fresh salad.

TIPS:

  • For added nutrition, serve with steamed green beans or roasted carrots.
  • You can prepare this brisket a day ahead—flavors deepen even more overnight.
  • Trim visible fat before cooking to keep the dish leaner while maintaining flavor.
